Whatever you do, make sure you want to write more than you want to be a writer. Make sure you want to act more than you want to be an actor. That is what will sustain you.
The best gift for an actor is the love of the fans. Many make sweet cards, write letters and even come and meet me wherever I am in India. The love and blessings of your elders is also always cherished, but the extra mile that the fans go to is memorable.
I like the sensibility of Australian film a lot and the crews are fantastic. Great characters, wonderful people and no line between — I think in Hollywood they have this line between actors and crew a lot, and that just didn't exist, which I really appreciated.
It's a political and manipulative industry. Actors vie for the same roles, movies are snatched away. Have I ever been manipulated? Yes. But I haven't manipulated anyone because if you think from the heart, you cannot be calculative. I have spent nights crying.
I am, by nature, pretty reserved. It was after I became an actor that I started interacting more with people from different walks of life!
I had always felt deep down that I owned the characters. Much as I adored and cherished the work of my actors, I felt that they were cast to do and be what I could not physically do or be.
Like any other actor, I want to work with good directors, and I always look for good scripts. I've had to say no to some people; I suspect that's the reason I'm called arrogant.
I suspect there isn't an actor alive who was able to truthfully answer his family's questions after his first day's activity in his future profession.
